I’ve been meal prepping for a while now, and one thing I’ve learned is that you don’t have to break the bank to stock your kitchen with essentials. The dollar store can be a surprisingly good resource for some of these items, if you know what to look for. I’ve found that a few key purchases can make a big difference in my weekly meal prep routine.
Pantry Staples
When it comes to pantry staples, the dollar store is a great place to pick up basics like rice, beans, and canned goods. I’ve found that the quality is generally comparable to what you’d find at a regular grocery store, and the prices are obviously much lower. For example, I can get a 2-pound bag of brown rice for $1, which is a fraction of what I’d pay elsewhere. Some other staples I like to grab at the dollar store include:
- Aluminum foil and parchment paper for wrapping and storing meals
- Spices and seasonings, like salt, pepper, and oregano
- Canned tomatoes and beans for adding to soups and stews
Storage and Organization
Another area where the dollar store shines is in storage and organization. I’ve found that their plastic containers and bags are perfect for meal prep, and they’re often much cheaper than what you’d find at a specialty kitchen store. For example, I can get a pack of 10 plastic containers with lids for $1, which is great for storing individual portions of soup or salad. Some other organizational items I like to grab at the dollar store include:
- Reusable zip-top bags for packing snacks
- Labels and markers for keeping track of what’s in each container
- A small colander for rinsing veggies
Miscellaneous Finds
Finally, I’ve found that the dollar store can be a great place to pick up miscellaneous items that can come in handy during meal prep. For example, I like to grab a few extra sets of utensils, like plastic forks and knives, in case I need them for a picnic or outdoor meal. I’ve also found that their paper plates and cups are perfect for when I’m meal prepping for a crowd. Some other miscellaneous items I like to grab at the dollar store include:
- Paper towels and cleaning supplies for cleaning up spills
- A small first aid kit, just in case
- A few extra trash bags for lining containers
Spring Meal Prep Tips
As we head into spring, I’ve been trying to get more creative with my meal prep routine. One thing I’ve been enjoying is taking advantage of the warmer weather to eat outdoors. If you’re trying to make your kitchen or dining space feel a bit more put-together for outdoor eating, I’ve been into art prints lately — there’s a solid collection of landscape and abstract prints at Printsofprint on Etsy if you want to browse. What are some of your favorite spring meal prep tips or tricks?
